Will Cross, a country boy from northwestern Virginia (later
West Virginia) joins a Confederate infantry company (Upshur
Grays, 25th Virginia Regiment) in May 1861 and sees action
from the first skirmish at Philippi to the surrender at
Appomattox four years later. "The Choice Was Gray,"
thoroughly researched, gives accurate views of Will's Army
experiences, as well as insights into cultural aspects of the
period. It also portrays the harsh living conditions in wartime
Richmond, seen through Will's romantic attachments with
two vivacious Richmond ladies. Through it all, Will relies on a
solid Christian faith to overcome obstacles.
