Leyland Hazlewood is a management consultant and
diplomat. The former Consul of Guyana in South Africa,
he has worked for years to improve the lives of people in
African countries through projects spanning health care,
environmental issues, trade, and investments. His list of
accomplishments includes positions at Baruch College
in New York, presenter at University of Witwatersrand,
South Africa, World Bank, and a delegate to United
Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development
and the Non-Aligned Nations Summit. He has been an
executive member of the Board of Trustees for Early
Steps, an organization devoted to promoting diversity in
New York City’s independent schools and also Board of
Trustees, St Marks College, South Africa. Hazlewood is
the author of two editions of “The Green Toys Directory”
and “CHESTER GOES TO AFRICA”, a children’s book
that raises issues about adventure, friendship and the
environment. He is a member of the Society of Children’
s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).
Chester is the field mouse who longs for the
countryside that had been destroyed by bulldozers in
order build a congested and polluted city.  “Chester
goes to Africa” where he embarks on a journey to find
clean, wide open spaces with lakes, mountains and
fields.  He experiences African cities on a journey that
leads him to encounters with fierce animals that
frequent the African landscape.  Using his drum that he
learned to play in the city that he left, Chester seeks to
befriend these fierce animals with his music.  Did
Chester find what he was looking for in Africa?
