The Swedish Gypsy is a historical novel set in Stockholm at the turn of
the 20th century. Fredrik, a successful businessman, hires Lilly to work
at his cafe. After a complaint from a customer, he learns that Lilly is a
Gypsy, but he keeps her on to tell fortunes. Fascinated by her culture
and mesmerized by her attractiveness and youth, they become lovers,
jeopardizing his family and his life. After a series of disastrous events,
including a huge general strike and his wife's devastating illness, he is
left with no other choice than to risk everything to save himself.
Extensively researched, the book portrays an authentic and engrossing
picture of Kalderash Gypsy and Swedish cultures.
